How to prepare for your at-home Brisbane newborn photoshoot
If you're looking for timeless Brisbane newborn photos that capture the essence of your growing family, an at-home photoshoot is the perfect option.
Welcoming a newborn into your home is one of the most beautiful moments of your life. Those tiny hands, the sleepy yawns, and the soft coos are memories you’ll want to cherish forever. One of the best ways to capture this fleeting stage is through a newborn photoshoot right in the comfort of your home. But how do you prepare for it?
Don't worry – it's simpler than you think. As a Brisbane newborn photographer, I’m here to guide you through every step. So, grab a cup of tea, sit back, and let’s get started!
1. Timing is everything
The ideal time for a newborn photoshoot is within the first two weeks after birth, usually between 5-14 days old. During this period, babies are still very sleepy, making it easier to pose them. Plus, those newborn features are at their sweetest!
I know the first few days of parenthood are overwhelming so, if you can, try to schedule the photoshoot in advance. That way, it's one less thing to worry about.
If you don’t manage to book it in within the first two weeks - don’t worry! For our firstborn, I only managed to book them in when he was four weeks old and they’re still some of my favourite photos.
2. Keep the house warm and cosy
Newborns are used to a warm, snug environment (think womb temperatures!), so crank up the heat in the room where the shoot will happen. A warm baby is more likely to stay calm and comfortable, which means more peaceful, sleepy photos.
Having a warm home isn’t so much of an issue in Brisbane but, if it’s a chilly room or cold day, have a space heater on hand to warm the room or the areas where your baby will be without clothes.
3. Lighting: natural is best
At-home photoshoots work best when using natural light. Choose a room with large windows that let in soft, natural light. This gives that beautiful, dreamy effect to the photos without harsh shadows or artificial lighting.
We’ll move around your home a bit to find the best light. So don’t stress if your living room isn’t magazine-perfect – I’m more focused on finding the light than anything else!
4. Choose simple, comfortable outfits
For your baby, soft, neutral-coloured outfits work best. Think whites, creams, or pastels. These colours let your newborn’s natural beauty shine through. Avoid loud prints or logos, as they can be distracting in photos.
For you and your partner: Feel free to express your personality through colours! Soft pastels, earthy tones, or even a pop of your favorite colour can bring warmth and individuality to the photos. Just make sure the outfits are comfortable and complement the calm, cosy vibe of the session.
5. Feed your baby right before the session
A well-fed baby is a happy baby! Plan to feed your newborn just before the photoshoot begins so they are content and sleepy. Newborn shoots take time, and there will be plenty of breaks for feeding, changing, or cuddling in between.
6. Prepare to go with the flow
Newborns run the show during these sessions. They might sleep through the whole thing, or they might need extra cuddles and feeding breaks. And that’s okay! The best newborn photos often come from those in-between moments – a yawn, a little stretch, or even a wide-eyed stare. Relax and let your baby set the pace.
Don’t worry if things don’t go according to plan. I’m used to working with babies, and I always allow extra time for any unexpected moments.
7. Props or no props?
If you have any special blankets, toys, or family heirlooms you’d like to include, have them ready! These personal touches can add a unique element to your photos. Otherwise, I’ll bring along a few simple props, like wraps and blankets to help style the session.
Less is often more. A cosy blanket and the soft folds of your baby’s skin can be all you need for breathtaking shots.
8. Tidy up, but don’t stress
Many parents in Brisbane prefer at-home newborn photos because it allows them to capture authentic, personal moments in their own space. But you don’t need to deep-clean your house - I promise!
Focus on tidying up the areas where the shoot will take place, but don’t stress about every little detail. We’ll likely shoot in just a few key spots (near windows or on a bed), and I’m happy to help move things around as needed.
If we’re shooting around the bedroom, one thing to keep in mind is your bedside tables. Try and clear them from mess beforehand - think water bottles, phone chargers, medications etc. It’s often something you don’t think about, but when you see them in photos afterwards it’s really something you notice.
9. Sibling and pet involvement
If your newborn has siblings or fur siblings, we can absolutely include them in some of the shots! For siblings, plan for them to be involved for a short time at the beginning or end of the session. This way, they can run off and play when we focus on the baby.
For pets, a few quick photos with your furry family member can be super sweet – just make sure they’re comfortable and calm around the baby.
10. Think about a playlist
Music can set the tone for a relaxed, soothing atmosphere during your newborn photoshoot. Create a playlist of calming tunes or your favourite songs that you find comforting. Whether it’s soft lullabies or the gentle melodies that make you feel at ease, the right background music can help everyone relax and create an inviting environment for beautiful, natural moments to unfold.
A peaceful, familiar playlist can also help soothe your newborn, making it easier to capture those dreamy, serene shots.
11. Relax and enjoy the moment
Finally, remember that these photos are about capturing your newborn’s earliest days and the connection between your family. Whether your baby is sound asleep or wide-eyed, the goal is to preserve this precious time.
The most beautiful photos come when everyone is relaxed and enjoying the moment. So take a deep breath, enjoy the snuggles, pop some music on, and trust that we’ll create something magical together.
